Exceptions to Academic Regulations
Academic regulations exist in order to ensure integrity and fairness in the academic programs of the University. Therefore, exceptions to academic regulations will be granted only when there are extenuating circumstances beyond the student’s control that justify special consideration. If a student believes that such circumstances exist, he or she may petition for an exception to an academic regulation. The petition process is outlined below:
- The student obtains a petition form from the Registrar’s Office.
- The student fills out the petition, stating clearly the reasons for the request and providing any supporting evidence.
- The student signs the petition and returns it to the Registrar’s Office. The registrar then passes the petition to the Dean. Upon the student’s request, the registrar may also make an appointment for the student to speak with the Dean concerning the petition.
- The Dean considers the petition, and if he/she deems it necessary, consults with the Graduate and Professional Studies Council.
- The Dean approves or denies the petition and returns the petition with an explanation to the registrar who informs the student of the decision.
