BEHL 335 Biopsychology

This course focuses on the physiological aspects of psychology, including biological bases for behavior, emotion, motivation, and cognition.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify basic brain structures and functional neural systems.
  2. Describe the process of signaling between nerve cells including chemical neurotransmitters.
  3. Compare and contrast the role of neurotransmitters in the etiology and treatment of various psychopathologies, including schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.
  4. List and describe the major methods used to study brain structure and function and the associated ethical issues.
  5. Discuss the functional organization of the sensory systems.
  6. Describe the process of neural development and the role of plasticity in development and recovery of function.
  7. Recognize and describe brain systems mediating sexual and reproductive behaviors, emotions, learning, memory, and consciousness.
  8. List and describe major neurological disorders, i.e., disease, injury, infections, and vascular disorders.
