LDRS 361 Law Enforcement Response to Mental Health & Officer Wellness

This course presents best practices for law enforcement for providing effective services to individuals with mental illness. Services and venues available to assist mentally ill populations will also be explored, as will criminal justice applications and alternative paths for offenders. Additionally, this course will address issues surrounding and ways to improve officer mental health and wellness.

  1. Understand historical perspectives on US social programming and law enforcement’s role regarding mental health
  2. Identify current approaches to mental health issues in the US and law enforcement’s role in addressing them
  3. Identify best practices in law enforcement’s approach to the mentally ill and people in crisis
  4. Understand alternative criminal justice processes for offenders experiencing mental illness
  5. Identify best practice wellness programs for first responders and police employees
