2025-2026 Undergraduate Catalog

CHEM 245 Survey of Organic Chemistry

This is a one semester course that provides an overview of the physical and chemical properties of carbon-containing compounds. Basic concepts include chemical bonding, 3D shapes, polarity, Lewis structures, and organic functional groups. These key fundamentals will be used to help you learn how to draw chemical structures and name organic compounds using a systematic method (e.g. - IUPAC nomenclature). You will also learn several important types of organic reactions and how to predict products for chemical reactions. There will be many specific examples of organic compounds and reactions found in the environment.
