CHEM 345 Introduction to Toxicology
The course is an introduction to fundamental topics which include the disposition of chemicals, toxicokinetics, oxidative stress, and various examples of mechanisms of toxic action. 3 credits lect. Prerequisite: CHEM 344 or BIOL 305.
Prerequisite
CHEM 344 or
BIOL 305 (only one of the two courses will be needed to meet the prerequisite)
Offered
Spring, even years
Outcomes
- Apply fundamental principles and concepts from previous science courses to analyze relevant topics in chemical toxicology
- Become proficient in the basic terminology of toxicology
- Learn the fundamental models of toxicokinetics
- Learn the chemistry of metabolism in phase one and phase two reactions
- Review fundamental principles of organic chemistry and functional group chemistry; and apply the chemistry to different mechanisms of toxic action
- Concentrate efforts on enhancing reading and analysis of research journal papers
