The basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing are developed in class. Laboratory work required.

Student Learning Outcomes
- The student will master material from the first twelve chapters of the French in Action text.
- The student will master a working French vocabulary of ca. 500 words.
- The student will be able to apply rules of French pronunciation to new reading texts.
- The student will be able to explain the use of grammatical structures covered in the first twenty units of the beginning French text.
- The student will be able to make introductions; ask questions about interests, preferences and hobbies, speak with a salesclerk and waiter; talk about clothing, personal effects and home furnishings; describe objects and people; talk about food and dining; and tell a short narrative in the past.
- The student will be able to describe new insights into the geography, history and lifestyles in parts of France and various French-speaking countries.
