CRES 822 Instructional Strategies for the Adult Learner

This course will examine the principles, practices, and educational philosophies fundamental to producing rigorous coursework that will optimally address the learning needs of the adult learner. Concepts covered in this course will include meeting learning needs from a visual, auditory, and psychomotor perspective. Using Bloom’s Taxonomy, participants will create learning activities and exam assessments appropriate to where the adult learner is in the learning continuum. Students will also get practice and gain expertise in writing effective activities, assessments, and examinations from a Bloom’s Taxonomy perspective, taking the learner from the recall to the synthesis or creation perspective.

  2. 2. Identify the unique attributes and challenges attributed to the adult learner and how they differ from other types of learners.
  3. 3. Have an arsenal of objective measures available for determining types of student learners in a class and for measuring student learning outcomes.
  4. 4. Design effective learning objectives and understand the importance of clear and measurable learning objectives in higher education.
  5. 5. Apply Bloom’s Taxonomy in creating and evaluating student assessment of learning in higher education.
  6. 6. Verbalize the evidence on best practices for learning and information retention and application of learning in adult learners.
  7. 7. Create quality rubrics and educational outcome measures.
  8. 8. Understand the evidence based high impact practices of higher education.
  9. 9. Practice giving quality feedback to students in higher education classrooms and identify the different forms of feedback.
