1. Recognize and apply the basic rules of English grammar and mechanics
2. Describe the steps of the writing process, including prewriting, organizing ideas, revising, and editing drafts of essays
3. Write well-organized essays that are substantially free of grammatical and mechanical errors in a number of genres
4. Practice critical thinking skills by analyzing sample essays in various genres
