FREN 201 Intermediate French I

Vocabulary development, grammar review, and development of conversational and writing skills are the main goals of this course.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. The student will master material from lessons 19-35 of the French in Action text.
  2. The student will master a working French vocabulary of ca. 1500 words.
  3. The student will be able to apply rules of French pronunciation to new texts.
  4. The student will be able to explain the use of grammatical structures of lessons 19-35 of the French text, including use of French verbs in the present, imperfect, passe compose, future, and plus-que-parfait; use and comparison of adjectives and adverbs; use of the conditional; idiomatic uses of French verbs, use of prepositional phrases and idiomatic phrases in French
  5. The student will be able to recite at least two poems in French; talk about interests; daily events; personal stories in the past; plans for the future; conduct conversations with friends, waiters, salespeople and officials, use proper idiomatic language to convey politeness and directness; give supported opinions about various modes of transportation and tell about student life in the Latin Quater of Paris.
  6. The student will be able to describe new insights into the geography, history and lifestyles in parts of France various French-speaking countries.
