MATH 412 History of Mathematics

A survey of the history of mathematics from antiquity through the present time. Contributions by various individuals and cultures will be examined. Both European and non-European mathematical developments will be explored, with an emphasis on the interrelationship between mathematics and the culture of the time.

  1. Compare and contrast the mathematics of different cultures.
  2. Demonstrate and explain the mathematical processes developed by various mathematicians and state the time during which they occurred.
  3. Explain various issues and disputes that arose during the development of mathematics.
  4. Describe the body of mathematics developed during different periods of time by different groups of people, and
  5. Conduct independent research into the history of mathematics.
