PSYC 401 Professional Ethics

This course provides a survey of the ethical issues in the practice of psychology.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify key principles contained in the APA Code of Ethics and NAADAC.
  2. Demonstrate a rudimentary understanding of ethical dilemmas.
  3. Distinguish between legal, ethical, and moral (or personal) standards.
  4. Explain recent ethical issues (e.g., HIPAA).
  5. Be able to distinguish between different sub-specialties in psychology.
  6. Distinguish between psychology and professional codes in related helping professions.
  7. Discuss current controversial issues within the context of ethical practice (e.g., duty to warn, empirically based treatment, prescription privileges).
  8. Be able to demonstrate how to respond to ethical dilemmas.
  9. Demonstrate an ability to critically apply the ethics code to practical dilemmas.
