REL 212 New Testament

A study of the origins and transmission of the New Testament writings in their historical, religious, and cultural contexts. The messages of these books for their original readers will be examined for their continuing significance today.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. To learn the contents of the NT books. The student is expected to learn the genre, structure, intention, themes and concerns of each NT book. The student is expected to know the order and arrangement of NT books within the canon.
  2. To learn about the historical and cultural contexts of the NT books. The student is expected to know key historical, geographical and cultural information relevant for understanding the NT.
  3. To gain familiarity with modern methods employed in the study of the NT. The student is expected to know scholarly views concerning the authorship, purpose, audience and special concerns of each NT book.
  4. To gain ability in seeing how these texts are relevant for today. The student is expected to be able to reflect upon the meaning of NT texts and make meaningful applications of these texts to present day situations.
  5. To learn a method of reading the NT texts which reflects modern day study of the NT. The student is encouraged to read through the entire NT in this class. The student is expected to be able to practice good reading methods when confronted with a NT text
