Overview
Mission Statement
The mission of the Chemistry Department at University of Jamestown is to provide a strong chemistry foundation for students majoring in chemistry and for students pursuing a career in health professions which require some chemistry knowledge and to help provide a strong science background for students pursuing teaching careers.
Majors and Concentrations
Students may elect to major in chemistry or biochemistry and select one concentration aligned with their career goals. Students interested in pursuing graduate study in chemistry/biochemistry or careers in industry may choose the concentration in chemical sciences. Students planning to pursue careers in the health professions, such as medicine or pharmacy, may choose the concentration in pre-medicine or pre-pharmacy.

General Education
See General Education Course Requirements for the Undergraduate College
Core Courses
CHEM 493 and CHEM 494: Students who have successfully completed an approved research program, such as a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), may be exempt from CHEM 493 with permission of the department chair.
Advanced Chemistry Labs
Choose three of the following courses
Concentrations
Students interested in attending graduate school or pursuing careers in industry should choose the concentration in chemical sciences. Students planning to pursue careers in the health professions, such as medicine or pharmacy, may choose the concentrations in pre-medicine or pre-pharmacy.
Concentration in Chemical Sciences
It is recommended that students interested in pursuing graduate study consult with their academic advisor about completing two semesters of either French or German to satisfy the Cultural Engagement elective.

It is recommended that students interested in pursuing graduate study consult with their academic advisor about completing two semesters of either French or German to satisfy the General Education Cultural Engagement elective.
Choose one from the following courses
The mathematics elective for the chemistry major will be selected in consultation with the student’s academic advisor. Students planning to pursue graduate study in chemistry are expected to choose Multidimensional Calculus, Linear Algebra and Series, or Ordinary Differential Equations. Students planning to teach at the secondary school level are expected to choose Statistics.
Total Credit Hours: 62-80
Outcomes
1a. Chemistry and biochemistry majors will demonstrate a broad-based foundation that will allow highly competitive candidacy for industry, education and graduate school in chemistry, biochemistry or other related interdisciplinary fields such as environmental chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, food science, toxicology and forensic chemistry.
1b. Chemistry and biochemistry majors, biology majors, chemistry minors and others taking chemistry will demonstrate a strong chemistry background for careers in professional fields such as medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, optometry, clinical laboratory science and other related allied health professions.
1c. Non-science majors will demonstrate a basic knowledge of chemistry and its importance in the world today.
2. Majors will demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
3. Majors will demonstrate an understanding of the importance of chemistry as it relates to the other sciences, to the environment, to industry, and to life in general.
4. Majors will demonstrate the skills necessary for communicating scientific information.
5. Majors will demonstrate the skills necessary to develop and conduct research.
