2024-2025 Undergraduate Catalog

BIOL 108 The Human Body (Lec/Lab)

An exploration of the process of science research, using the human body as a study system. Concepts covered include the structure and function of cells and organ systems as well as human genetics and health. (Not for major or minor credit.)

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand the scientific process, including how to identify testable hypotheses and predictions, and critical elements of experiments designed to test hypotheses
  2. Critically evaluate the quality of evidence that has been presented in support of or refuting a scientific hypothesis
  3. Describe how the molecular structure of cellular components affects that function of cells and tissues
  4. Descirbe how cells and tissues work together to promote organ and organism function (e.g. how cells divide to repair damaged cells, how the body recognizes and fights invading pathogens)
  5. Describe how organ systems work together to promote homeostasis
  6. Use the knowledge gained through this course to inform daily life decisions
  7. Explain biological concepts covered in lab, including the process of science, evolution, and the function of selected organ systems (e.g. cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous)
  8. Identify the major internal organs that belong to the 11 organ systems
  9. Develop testable hypotheses and design experiments to support or refute them
  10. Analyze and interpret data
