PT 781 Clinical Ed Theory I

This course is an introduction to the profession of physical therapy (PT), including the elements of PT practice and American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Core Values. Students will be introduced to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) model of functioning and disability and the biopsychosocial model of health. This course will cover the requirements to participate in clinical experiences and program professional behavior expectations.

  1. Define physical therapy.
  2. Describe a brief history of the profession of physical therapy in the United States.
  3. Describe the roles of the physical therapist in primary, secondary, and tertiary care.
  4. Describe the roles of the physical therapist in prevention and health promotion.
  5. Describe the roles of the physical therapist in consultation, education, research, and administration.
  6. Describe the structure and components of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) model of functioning and disability.
  7. Define the biopsychosocial model of health.
  8. Define evidence-based physical therapist practice.
  9. Describe the elements of the physical therapy patient/client management model (Examination, Evaluation, Diagnosis, Prognosis, Intervention, Outcomes).
  10. Describe the core values expected in physical therapy professional practice (APTA Core Values: Accountability, Altruism, Compassion/Caring, Excellence, Integrity, Professional Duty, Social Responsibility).
  11. Identify the requirements for successful completion of the University of Jamestown Physical Therapy Program clinical education experiences.
