FREN 340 Survey of Francophone Literature

A survey of Francophone writings and cinema of the Twentieth Century. The course centers on questions of identity in post-colonial Africa and in modern Quebec. A combination of literary works, essays and films makes up the material for the course.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. The student will review important aspects of French language structures and be able to integrate these structures into her writing.
  2. The student will read works by authors in Quebec and French Polynesia in order to learn about literature written in French outside the borders of France.
  3. The student will increase her vocabulary and acquaintance with French idiom and language structure through the reading of unedited works.
  4. The student will learn how to discuss a literary work in French.
  5. The student will improve her/his writing skills through exercises and compositions.
  6. The student will gain an overview of the complexities of modern Quebec and French Polynesia through study of a variety of texts.
