MUS 340 Music History III: Romantic and Modern Eras

This is the third semester of the a three-semester sequence of courses. The purpose of the course is to acquaint the student with the major trends in Western music from the Romantic and Modern eras. The student will study the style, forms, and major composers of the given historical periods.

  1. Understand the techniques used by composers in the Romantic and Modern periods,
  2. Know who the important composers were in these periods,
  3. Know some of the important pieces of these periods,
  4. Discover political and environmental influences on music of the time and be able to discuss, listen, and defend different positions,
  5. Learn what to listen for in Romantic and Modern music,
  6. Understand the importance of music in these time periods as it pertains to general and music history,
  7. Learn basic methods of research and writing.
