Active Threat / Acts of Violence

Before:

  1. Prepare: Have a plan for yourself and others. Every second counts. Prepare by knowing where exits are, knowing the layout of the room or building you are in, be aware of your surroundings, be mindful of others around you, and get training.
  2. Prevent: Our primary goal is prevention. Recognizing and reporting warning signs of violence. This may include: 
    • An individual threating violence. 
    • Expressing grievance or frustration. 
    • A fixation on someone.
    • Erratic behavior
    • An individual that identifies with previous attackers
    • Someone who researches or plans an attack 
    • An individual that makes you concerned about your safety or the safety of others

During:

  1. Run away from the threat and take others with you if it is safe to do so. Call 911. 
  2. Hide if avoiding the threat is not an option. Find a safe place to seek shelter and barricade yourself from the threat. Turn off lights, get behind a solid object, and call or text 911 your exact location. 
  3. Fight as a last resort. If confronted by an attacker, defend yourself and others. Be aggressive!

After:

After an attack or act of violence and after you have gotten to a safe place, ensure that both you and others are safe, including seeking medical attention if need be. Report any information you may have to law enforcement.
