EDUC 408 Methods: Secondary English
Designed for secondary English education majors, the course provides an overview of secondary English education-history, issues, state and national standards. Standards-based instruction for secondary English will be examined and applied. Includes an emphasis on instructional technologies. Candidates will discuss and develop sensitivity to diversity and inclusivity that is demanded in today's schools and will plan lessons and units that allow and help students to explore this diversity. Taken as part of a methods block, this course provides a 30-hour field experience in which candidates prepare, teach, and assess lessons.

- Analyze the developmental characteristics of secondary students and how these influence learning in the English classroom. (InTASC 1)
- Design lesson plans and instructional strategies that accommodate the diverse developmental, cultural, linguistic, and learning differences of students in secondary English education for an inclusive learning environment. (InTASC 1, 2)
- Create a classroom management plan that fosters a positive and productive learning environment, including instructional technologies that can enhance student engagement and learning in a diverse classroom setting. (InTASC 3)
- Develop and present a unit plan, encompassing at least five lesson plans, that align with state and national standards and demonstrate a deep understanding of the content and structure of secondary English language arts, including oral language, language studies, literature, and composition. (InTASC 4)
- Apply knowledge of English content to real-world contexts, helping students see the relevance of their learning through case studies and simulations which foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills. (InTASC 5)
- Plan a variety of formative and summative assessment strategies to monitor student learning in secondary English and adjust instructional practices to meet the needs of all students. (InTASC 6)
- Incorporate instructional strategies and technologies in unit and lesson plans to enhance learning and engagement and ensure that all students have access to a rigorous and relevant curriculum. (InTASC 7)
- Explore a range of research-based instructional strategies to engage and support all learners and improve student outcomes. (InTASC 8)
- Demonstrate understanding of ethical practices in teaching, respecting the diverse backgrounds and needs of all students through case studies and role-playing. (InTASC 9)
- Collaborate with peers to develop strategies that support student learning and well-being in secondary English. (InTASC 10)
