EDUC 405 Methods: Elementary Content Reading
An overview of elementary reading education-history, issues, state and national standards. Candidates will be introduced to techniques, procedures, strategies, methods, and materials in reading instruction. Includes an emphasis on instructional technologies. Examines the physical, psychological, and social factors involved in learning to read through grade 8. Reading theories and philosophies will be discussed. Taken as part of a methods block that requires a 30-hour field experience in which candidates prepare, teach, and assess lessons

- Locate reading standards on the web and discuss how they affect teaching reading. (InTASC 1, 4)
- Apply strategies for phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comp0rehension, content area reading and writing instruction. (InTASC 4, 5)
- Utilize technology when appropriated for lesson presentations and resources. (InTASC 5)
- Compile documentation and ample instructional procedures for the varying strategies as referenced by the science of reading (InTASC 5, 6, 8)
- Eomonstrate, in mini-lessons, strategies to nurture and scaffold student literacy. (InTASC 1, 7, 8)
- Apply authentic experiences of strategies with children in a local school. (InTASC 3, 5)
- Integrate the use of media as a resource tool for teaching and gaining experiences. (InTASC 5)
- Identify different approaches to learning and performance for diverse learners. (InTASC 2)
- Analyze the assessment of student learning and teacher self-improvement. (InTASC 1, 6, 9)
