EDUC 423 Diagnostic & Corrective Reading

Designed to help prospective teachers become familiar with techniques in determining types of reading problems and presenting appropriate corrective procedures.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Examine and differentiate between screening, diagnostic, progress monitoring, and outcomes assessments for reading. (InTASC 6a, 6j, 6k)
  2. Analyze current research on reading disabilities (InTASC Standard 2)
  3. Implement screening and formative assessments for phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills to assess student reading ability (InTASC 6a, 6b, 6j, 6k)
  4. Develop a profile of one student with a reading disability in all 5 areas from above (InTASC 1a, 2h, 6g, 6l, 6o)
  5. Develop an instructional plan from the above profile that aids in the identification and correction of reading difficulties (InTASC 1a, 1b, 1e, 2, 6g, 6l, 6o, 7, 8a, 8b, 8h, 8k, 8l)
  6. Identify and practice Tier 1 and Tier 2 reading strategies for classroom use. (InTASC 8a, 8b, 8h, 8k, 8l)
