MUS 102 Music in Film

This course will cover music fundamentals and some music history, particularly as they pertain to film music. Study will be provided in how music and sound function in film as well as the history of music and sound in film from the silent era to the present. Prior musical knowledge is not required. For the non-music major.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Learn basic film terminology.
  2. Learn basic music terminology and apply this to both song favorites as well as new musical selections.
  3. Understand the historical and technological evolution of music and film, then critique period films in both the context of their point in history as well as from today's perspective.
  4. Learn the tools Film Composers used to enhance and expand on the mood of a film, then trace these same methods used by Composers of film today.
  5. Apply this knowledge to film projects.
