MUS 124 Applied Lesson: Woodwinds
Applied lessons are available in brass, percussion, piano, voice, and woodwinds. Music education majors normally carry one credit of lessons per semester, which represents a one half-hour lesson per week. Music performance majors are required to carry two semester credits of lessons per semester, which represent a one-hour lesson per week. Students who are registered for applied lessons must perform a jury reviewed by the music faculty at the end of each semester. Students who present a recital before semester break are included in this requirement. Students who present a recital after semester break will consult with their studio lesson teacher as to their jury obligations.

Student Learning Outcomes
- Performance: Students will develop skills through the performance of level-appropriate repertoire.
- Improvisation: Lessons will include opportunities for improvisation and creative individual expression.
- Technology: Students will use technology to achieve course objectives by recording, play back, and critical listening of performances, rehearsals, and personal practice. Students will also use websites and databases for research. Ensembles will incorporate metronomes, video and audio recording devices and tuners. Band-in-a-box is available for use in improvising.
- World Music: Students will study music from various cultures.
- Music Pedagogy: Students will learn a variety of pedagogical techniques about performing solos on their instrument, section playing, ensemble playing, as well as developing teaching and rehearsal techniques as future band directors.
- Music Literacy: Students will study and learn from recognized pedagogical collections, including: Essential Elements (Hal Leonard), Standard of Excellence (Neil Kjos Music Company), Accent on Achievement (Alfred Publishing), Practical Studies (Alfred Publishing).
