MUS 126 Applied Lesson: Percussion
Applied lessons are available in brass, percussion, piano, voice, and woodwinds. Music education majors normally carry one credit of lessons per semester, which represents a one half-hour lesson per week. Music performance majors are required to carry two semester credits of lessons per semester, which represent a one-hour lesson per week. Students who are registered for applied lessons must perform a jury reviewed by the music faculty at the end of each semester. Students who present a recital before semester break are included in this requirement. Students who present a recital after semester break will consult with their studio lesson teacher as to their jury obligations.

Student Learning Outcomes
- To provide each student with the opportunity to master basic and advanced techniques and develop a daily fundamental routine addressing areas of sound, articulation, and musicianship.
- To present new repertoire to challenge each student’s musical development and technical ability.
- To gain familiarity with standard musical and percussion terminology as related to percussion.
- To provide a greater understanding and application of historical issues and applied pedagogy related to percussion.
- To integrate technology to better assess musical development and performance.
- To explore world music through the works of composers from different cultures and cultural influences.
- To experience improvisation through the creation of technique exercises, etudes, and the study of repertoire that incorporate improvisation, including jazz vibraphone.
