PSYC 311 Theories of Personality

This course provides an introduction to the major theories of personality: psychoanalytic, trait, biological, humanistic, behavioral, and cognitive. Each theory will be critically examined with respect to its ability to explain human behavior and to generate strategies for assessing and modifying personality.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Knowledge Base of Psychology: Students will demonstrate familiarity with the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in psychology. - Concepts of personality theory and concepts will be discussed in great detail. - Empirical findings will be discussed and evaluated throughout the course. - The evolution of personality theory will be discussed.
  2. Critical Thinking Skill in Psychology: Students will respect and use the critical and creative thinking, skeptical inquiry, and, when possible, the scientific approach to solve problems related to behavior and mental processes. - Critical thinking will be drawn out when discussing the principles of personality theory.
  3. Application of Psychology: Students will understand and apply psychological principles to personal, social, and organizational issues. - Students will apply personality theory by analyzing a person's personality from each perspective. - Discussions will also entail applying personality theory to current headlines in the media.
  4. Communication Skills: Students will communicate effectively in a variety of formats. - Your final written analysis will enhance your written communication skills. - Discussion during class will enhance your oral communication skills.
