KNS 360 Methods in Health Education

This course prepares future teachers with skills and knowledge necessary to work in the area of school health education at the elementary, middle and secondary level. This course will focus on National and North Dakota Health Education standards, skills-based learning approach, health pedagogy and assessment methodology across content areas, as well as the Health Education Curriculum Assessment (HECAT).

  2. Advocate for the health education profession (InTASC 10).
  3. Describe the Whole Child, Whole School, Whole Community approach and discuss ways to enhance collaboration across stakeholders (InTASC 10).
  4. Knowledge of the HECAT and the process of developing or evaluating a health education program (InTASC 4, 6).
  5. Describe key components of a skills-based health education program (InTASC 4).
  6. Describe the changing needs of students across grades (InTASC 1).
  7. Discuss how to apply the skill development model to the skills of the National and North Dakota Health Education Standards (InTASC 7).
  8. Using backward design, plan a skills-based health education curriculum that meets the needs of students (InTASC 7).
  9. Design and implement assessments that measure student knowledge acquisition and skill performance (InTASC 6).
  10. Discuss and apply strategies for creating a positive learning environment (InTASC 3).
  11. Discuss and apply strategies for effectively implementing a skills-based approach to health education in pre-K-12 (InTASC 8).
  12. Create a personal professional development plan (InTASC 9).
