MUS 239 Music History I: Medieval and Renaissance

This is the first semester of a three-semester sequence of courses. The purpose of the course is to acquaint the student with the major trends in Western music from ancient civilizations through the sixteenth century. The student will study the style, forms, and major composers of the given historical periods.

  1. Understand the techniques used by composers in the Medieval and Renaissance periods,
  2. Know who the important composers were in these periods.
  3. Know the important pieces of these periods.
  4. Discover political and environmental influences on music of the time and be able to discuss, listen, and defend different positions.
  5. Learn what to listen for in Medieval and Renaissance music.
  6. Understand the importance of early music as it pertains to general and music history.
  7. Learn basic methods or research and writing.
