MUS 291 Music Methods - Elementary

Methods and materials used in teaching K-5 music classes, emphasizing Orff and Kodaly, and Dalcroze approaches for developing musicianship in children. Topics include ukulele, recorder lesson plan writing and implementation, curriculum and unit plan design, resource discovery, diverse learners, assessment, and classroom management. The Teacher Education Program's Key Assessment 2 will be completed and assessed (on Chalk and Wire) in this course.

Outcomes

  1. Experience and teach lesson plans through which they will learn the educational concepts.
  2. Discover internet and paper resources for organizing and preparing music lessons.
  3. Be challenged to think creatively in how they present information to children.
  4. Learn how to teach through the standard Orff, Kodaly, and Dalcroze methods.
  5. Become proficient on the ukulele.
  6. Become proficient on the recorder.
  7. Critically observe and respond to active elementary music educators.
  8. Discover and learn various songs appropriate to the age level.
  9. Teach lessons to local elementary students.
