MUS 266 Introduction to Conducting

This course is designed to introduce students to the art of choral/instrumental conducting. Students will gain basic conducting skills, and an understanding of how they may be appropriately applied.

  1. Discuss the attributes of a successful conductor.
  2. Demonstrate appropriate body posture, arm, hand, and wrist movements which communicate clear and expressive musical intentions.
  3. Execute gestures indicating desired tempo, dynamics, and articulation.
  4. Conduct regular and irregular beat patterns.
  5. Develop independence of hands
  6. Introduction to score analysis
  7. Explore effective communication techniques from the podium.
