KNS 261 Methods and Activities for Teaching Elementary Physical Education

This course is designed to teach activities, materials, methods of instruction, planning and development of programs, and basic characteristics of children and how they learn motor skills. This information is applied to teaching, organizing, and evaluating a school physical education program. Prerequisites: HPETE or elementary education major or permission.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify the characteristics of a quality elementary physical education program.
  2. Progressively sequence activities to facilitate the development of mature and proficient fundamental movement skills across all skill themes.
  3. Demonstrate a level of personal competency that will allow for appropriate demonstration of fundamental movement skills.
  4. Write developmentally appropriate skill theme lesson plans using a “content development” format.
  5. Develop and implement practical assessments with children as a way to check for understanding.
  6. Distinguish between the characteristics of both the traditional and developmental physical education models.
  7. Explain why physical education is a vital component of the school curriculum.
  8. Define the term developmentally appropriate physical education for children.
  9. Know, understand, and be able to demonstrate the application of the movement analysis framework including all skill theme and movement concepts.
  10. Identify and provide appropriate movement tasks based on the observed skill level of children.
  11. Be able to identify critical errors through observation of children performing fundamental movement skills.
  12. Explain the relationship of games, gymnastics, dance, and content in other subject areas to skill themes and movement concepts.
  13. Demonstrate an ability to modify skill themes and movement concepts to facilitate understanding of the concepts while enhancing the potential for skilled movement.
